Allopurinol can cause severe skin reactions, most often during the first few months of treatment. The occurrence of a rapidly progressive rash with mucosal lesions, blisters or skin detachment requires immediate discontinuation of treatment and urgent medical advice. Some people of Asian origin are at much greater risk than Europeans for these serious cutaneous adverse reactions due to a genetic predisposition.
This drug is not a treatment for gout attacks. On the other hand, paradoxically, it can cause gout attacks at the beginning of treatment. The doctor usually combines it with colchicine or a low-dose NSAID during the first months of treatment.
Certain antecedents must be brought to the attention of your doctor: Lesch-Nyhan disease, certain blood diseases, renal insufficiency.
Blood tests (uric acid dosage) are necessary to judge the effectiveness of the treatment.
Caution: driverDriver: this drug may cause dizziness.
INTERACTIONS OF ALLOPURINOL BIOGARAN WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES
This drug should not be combined with drugs containing azathioprine (IMUREL and generics) or mercaptopurine (PURINETHOL): risk of bone marrow toxicity.
It may interact with certain chemotherapies (e.g. cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, bleomycin, procarbazine) and drugs containing cyclosporine, vidarabine or didanosine.
Also tell your doctor if you are taking an oral anticoagulant, an ACE inhibitor, a diuretic, an antibiotic containing amoxicillin or ampicillin, a drug containing aluminum hydroxide, theophylline or aminophylline.
