Drug family: Diuretic
WHEN IS ALDACTONE PRESCRIBED?
This drug belongs to the family of diuretics. Its characteristic is to prevent the loss of potassium in the urine, usual with most other diuretics. It works by blocking the action of aldosterone, a natural substance whose level may be abnormally high in certain diseases or due to another diuretic treatment.
It is used in the treatment of
disorders related to an excess of aldosterone in the blood,
High blood pressure,
ascites or edema related to liver failure, heart failure or nephrotic syndrome
myasthenia, in addition to other treatments, to fight against potassium losses.
The 25 mg tablets are also used in adults to treat severe heart failure, in association with the standard background treatment.

Your doctor will order regular blood tests to check your blood potassium and sodium levels and the proper functioning of your kidneys. Monitoring may be reinforced in the elderly or in cases of impaired kidney or liver function, diabetes, dehydration, or general health problems.
Do not use diet salt, which is often rich in potassium, unless your doctor agrees.
Caution: sportsmen and women: this medication contains a substance that may make some anti-doping tests positive.
INTERACTIONS OF ALDACTONE WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES
This drug should not be used in combination with :
diuretics that raise the level of potassium in the blood or drugs that contain potassium: risk of hyperkalemia that can lead to serious heart rhythm disorders;
mitotane used in certain cancers: risk of cancellation of its effect.
It may interact with enzyme conversion inhibitors, angiotensin II inhibitors and drugs containing cyclosporine or tacrolimus.
Also tell your doctor if you are taking an NSAID, corticosteroid, alpha-blocker, vasodilator, neuroleptic, imipraminic antidepressant, or a drug containing levodopa, lithium, carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine.
